Google to improve its translation app with the goal of reducing gender bias

Leading tech giant, Google said that it is working on its translation application in order to reduce gender bias.

Earlier, most of the Google Translations were done in masculine name while converting one language to another. According to the Product Manager of the company, James Kuczmarski they have been working for years to reduce the gender bias and promote fairness in its machine learning tool.

As of now, translator showed only one translation for a query and that too mostly in masculine name. But from now, the Google Translator will show the translation in both of the genders. For example, if someone looked for words like a doctor, the translator often gave results as ‘He is a doctor’. For a nurse, results are like ‘She is a nurse’. These kinds of translations often promote gender inequality.

From now on, words like ‘doctor’, 'surgeon', etc. will be translated to ‘He is a Doctor’ and ‘She is a doctor’ in languages including English into French, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish. According to the company, the developers are working to extend this translation update to other languages as well.

The Product Manager of the company also confirmed that they are working on some non-binary gender in the Google translations as well. This project may not be the part of the Google Translation, gender-bias reduction project but will be discussed soon.
